The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a bill aimed at improving electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across the state. The bill also establishes an electricity market, regulatory bodies for the power sector, and enforces consumer rights and obligations.
During Thursday’s plenary session in Abeokuta, Deputy Speaker Bolanle Ajayi presented the committee’s report on the bill, which was adopted following a motion by Ajayi, seconded by Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye. The bill’s third reading was moved by Majority Leader Yusuf Serif and again seconded by Adeleye.
Lawmakers had previously debated the bill’s benefits during its second reading on August 28, emphasizing the need for improved electricity infrastructure in Ogun State. The passage of the bill is expected to create a more efficient and consumer-friendly power sector.
Several legislators expressed gratitude to the federal and state governments, as well as the National Assembly, for shifting electricity regulation from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List. This change empowers states to independently generate, transmit, and distribute electricity within their jurisdictions.
The move is seen as a significant step towards improving electricity access and reliability in the state, as well as enhancing consumer protection and participation in the electricity market.
