The Kano State Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the violent unrest that occurred in early August held its inaugural session on Thursday, September 5, at the Kano State High Court. The commission was established to investigate the killings, arson, looting, and destruction that took place during the #EndBadGovernance protest.
During its first session, the panel called for public and media cooperation to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. The 14-member commission, inaugurated by Governor Abba Yusuf on Monday, has been given a one-month deadline to deliver its findings.
Governor Yusuf emphasized his commitment to allowing the commission to operate independently, assuring the public that there would be no interference in its work. The commission’s findings are expected to shed light on the events surrounding the unrest and provide recommendations for preventing such incidents in the future.
Justice Lawan Mohmoud (Rtd), chairman of the commission, emphasized the panel’s commitment to thoroughness and transparency. “We pledge to do our best to fulfil the task given to us by the government,” he stated. “Our doors are open, and we urge the public to provide us with both oral and written submissions to assist in our inquiry.”
Justice Mohmoud stressed the importance of objective media coverage.
“We appeal to the media to report our proceedings fairly and accurately. If there are any ambiguities, please seek clarification from us before publishing to avoid pre-empting our findings,” he said.
The commission’s mandate includes examining the causes of the unrest, identifying responsible individuals or groups, assessing damage and losses, and recommending measures to prevent future occurrences.
“We will investigate thoroughly to determine who or what caused these serious disturbances and their roles,” Justice Mohmoud explained.
The commission is guided by the provisions of Section 8 of the Kano State Commission of Inquiry Law Cap 26, Laws of the Kano State of Nigeria 2018. In its efforts, the panel will visit the affected sites and engage with security agencies to gather comprehensive information.
Justice Mohmoud assured that the commission would approach its task with fairness and diligence. “We are committed to conducting a thorough investigation and providing well-informed recommendations,” he concluded.
The public is encouraged to contribute evidence and testimonies to aid the commission in its crucial work.
