Law Week 2024: NBA Lagos Branch Holds A Memorable Elders Night, Honours Mr Paul Usoro, SAN

The Law Week 2024 Elders Night is one of the programmes marking the NBA Lagos Branch Annual Law Week events.

The event which took place at Harbour Point event centre in Lagos on the 12th of June, 2024, was attended by many senior members of the branch, predominantly 20 years post call and above, beautifully, stylishly and elegantly dressed in different African and western dinner outfits including agbada, etigbo, senator, gowns and suits.

The event commenced around 5pm with the arrival of the guests, followed by the singing of the new national anthem and the NBA Prayer, a brief contest of the 7 best-dressed agbada outfits and a welcome remark by the Chairperson of the Advisory Committee of the branch, Mr Ade Adedeji, SAN.

In his remarks, Mr Ade Adedeji, SAN welcomed every guest to the event stressing that the event is not only about the regular dinner of lawyers where lawyers eat, drink and network but a celebration of the elders and heroes of the Branch. He noted that every year, the committee will identify an elder of the Branch who has distinguished himself and celebrate him and that for this year, the Committee had carefully chosen the former president of the NBA, Mr Paul Usoro, SAN as the Awardee for his feats. He further informed the guests that the Awardee had provided everything being enjoyed at the event. He ended his remark by charging everyone to drink, eat and enjoy themselves.

Thereafter, there was a light entertainment by the Cartoon Boys entertainment band and a dinner speech by Boma Alabi, the Chairperson of the Section on Business Law. Speaking on the topic: Thriving in a Difficult Environment, Boma Alabi Stated that it will be an understatement to describe Nigeria at the moment as a difficult environment in view of rising inflation. She ended her speech by disclosing some nuggets on how to survive in a difficult environment. She stated that we have to earn enough, take stock of our assets, network and build relationships, adapt and be able to apply mindfulness.

In his welcome remarks, the Chairman thanked everyone, especially Miss Folashade Ali, SAN who worked tirelessly as the Chairperson of the Organising Committee to put together a stellar law week conference. The Chairman informed everyone of another event, the young lawyers movie night, which was happening simultaneously at Terra Kulture, with the Elders Night.

Mr Ade Adedeji was called to present the Award to Mr Paul Usoro, SAN, represented by Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN. Mr Ikwuazom, SAN speaking on behalf of the Awardee expressed gratitude to the branch for its support in 2018 when Paul contested and won the election to the office of the NBA President. He reaffirmed his support to the Branch and expressed readiness to always support the branch.

The Chairperson of the gave a brief talk on the Branch’s effort toward completing the Branch’s Bar Centre project. He emphasised that the Branch must finish the project in the next 18 months. He immediately launched a fundraising with a target of N100,000,000 as the minimum. A number of senior lawyers donated generously.

The fundraising was followed by a live band performance by the star artist of the night, Sir Shina Peters.

The Elders Night was an opportunity for the elders of the branch to unwind and network with one another.
