OPENING REMARKS OF THE CHAIRPERSON, 2022 LAW WEEK PLANNING COMMITTEE

It is definitely my pleasure to welcome everyone to the beginning of the 2022 LAW WEEK activities of the NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION, LAGOS BRANCH (The Premier Branch).

We have chosen the theme “DEMOCRACY AND LEGAL ORDER: SHAPING THE FUTURE” deliberately, having regard to the times that we are in.

Just as we are adjusting to the reality that COVlD-l9 Pandemic has come to stay and are adapting to new ways of doing things, we have found ourselves getting ready for the next general elections in the midst of terrorism, banditry, kidnappings, ritual killings, boko haram insurgency, constitutional amendments and judicial intervention in the resolution of significant constitutional issues like jurisdiction over value added Tax, financial autonomy of the Judiciary and the Local Govemment Councils, Consequences of carpet crossing by elected politicians to mention a few.

All of these have significant impacts on the lives of Legal Practitioners and Judicial Officers.

They also have definite impacts on the Nigerian Nation in view of the fact that Legal Order has a sugmficant role to play In our democracy, significant components of which are regular general elections the next of which is coming up in less than a year.

We have deliberately chosen this theme to examine issues relevant to all these developments.

In the course of the technical sessions we shall be engaging the challenges to Nigerian democracy posed by banditry, Boko Haram insurgency, kidnappings as well as relationships between the Judiciary, the Legislature and the Executive arms of government in the run up to the elections commg up next year.

We have taken time to assemble an array of distinguished Speakers who cut across the Bar, the Bench, Experts in Economic Management and Fiscal Pollnes, Captains of Industry, Eminent Journalists, the Legislature and the Human nghls Community.

The Law Week Committee Members have worked tirelessly in the last few months to present us with a combination of actIvities.

It shall be a Hybrid Conference. Virtual and in-Person attendance.

I therefore urge every member of the Premier Branch our learned friends in other branches of the Nigerian Bar Assoaation, and, indeed, other well-meaning pmfesstonals and patriotic nigerians to take advantage of the unique opportunity that this Law Week presents, to create time to break off from our normal routines, and have an experience that does not take us out of the practice of our profession, but which at the same time affords us opportumtles to relax, to learn, to give back to the less privileged, and to impact the Nigerian Nation.

I want to use this opportunity to thank the Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos Branch to the opportunity given to Members of The Law Week Committee, 2022, to organise this programme.

I also thank members of the Law Week 2022 Committee who have worked (and continue to work tirelessly) to ensure a hitch-free Law Week Programme.

I wish you all a rewarding and enjoyable Law Week.
